Kottinger built this barn out of adobe in 1852, and it is the oldest building still standing downtown. Kottinger was the first Justice of the Peace for the Pleasanton area. His home next to the barn was the courthouse for Pleasanton, and his barn acted as the first jail. There was a tunnel between the two to easily and safely transport criminals between the court and the jail without making a scene outside.
